DEXA Scan – September 2026

So… I had a DEXA scan 🤣
I love DATA.
I have a Garmin smart scale, Garmin watch, Oura ring, Apple Health… I even bought a £30 smart tape measure a few months ago 🤦🏽♀️🤣
And I weigh myself every morning.
But I wanted MORE data 😬🤣
I’ve wanted to do a DEXA for ages, and thought now is probably a good time since I’m actually losing weight.
I started at around 96kg in mid July and was 88.4kg when I had the scan on 9th September.
I was actually quite nervous about it. I haven’t done proper strength training for probably 3-4 years now and I just assumed my results would be pretty bad 🤣
Anyway.
I got on the machine, laid there for a few minutes trying not to move and then it was time for the damage 😬
Body fat – 32.6%

Well then.
Official confirmation that I am indeed chubby.
29.1kg of me is fat.
TWENTY NINE KILOS
Although tbf I expected it to be bad so that wasn’t exactly the shock of the century.
What DID surprise me was the muscle.
I had 56.9kg of lean tissue and for my height that’s more than around 73% of women my age.

HOW?! 🤣🤣
The guy actually asked me if I do gym work.
Nope 😬
I told him I haven’t done proper strength training for 3-4 years and he looked surprised. He said I’ve got a good amount of muscle.
Not going to complain about that 🤣
I guess all the years of Ironman training did something. Even if I’ve spent the last few years actively avoiding the gym because I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing in there.
My left side is weaker than my right as well. About 6.8% difference.

I’m left handed.
Interesting … 🤦🏽♀️🤣
And I have really good bones?!
My bone density score was +2.91 and in the optimal range.

So basically there’s a decent skeleton and some muscles hiding under all the fat.
I was quite happy about my visceral fat too. It was around 79cm² and still in their average range. I genuinely expected that one to be much worse.

Then he showed me how much fat I’d need to lose to get everything into the green. See the details on the top photo.
7kg.
Okay… that actually doesn’t sound impossible?!
That’s 7kg of FAT though, not necessarily 7kg on the scales. So I’ll probably have to lose quite a bit more body weight than that.
I’ve always had 75kg in my head as my end goal, but now I’m thinking I’ll just see what happens.
If I get to 80kg and my next scans look good then maybe I don’t actually need to be 75kg 🤷🏽♀️
Never thought I’d say that 🤣
Oh and then came the final insult.
Athletic age: 46.3
FORTY SIX.
I’m 37 😭
And it even says NEEDS WORK underneath.
The guy said losing the 7kg of fat should get that into the green as well.
So that’s it.
As I’m writing this I’m 85.6kg, which means I’m over 10kg down from my starting weight already 🥹
96kg → 88.4kg at DEXA → 85.6kg now.
I’m actually pretty happy with the results.
I genuinely expected the rest to be much worse. Specially the muscle after doing basically zero strength work for years.
Annoyingly this means actually using the adjustable dumbbells and approximately 600 resistance bands I’ve bought and then abandoned around my house over the years 🤦🏽♀️
I’ve pencilled another DEXA in for December.
Then I’ll do another one around March/April before Ironman Texas.
I’m really curious what those will show because I don’t just want to see the number on the scales going down anymore.
I want the FAT to go down.
The muscle can stay where it is 🤣
Anyway…
DEXA #1 done.
See you in December.
Hopefully younger than 46…
Gabi xx
